🐢8.2 Special Post for the Penyu Agar Hatchling Release

I visited the Redang marine conservation group and honestly I learned a lot. Living inland for so long I rarely deal with marine wildlife so this was eye opening.

The researchers explained that the sex of a sea turtle is determined by the temperature of the egg. If the temperature is above 28°C the hatchling becomes female and if it is below 28°C it becomes male. This reminded me of alligators which also have temperature-based sex determination.

Only one in a thousand sea turtle babies survives to adulthood. I really hope the one I saw and released makes it. Maybe one day I will meet it again when I go snorkeling at Redang’s Turtle Point 🥹

It is so small now but I am wishing it strength and success for the future. Truly adorable.
