🐦‍⬛7.21 Luhu:Talk with Property Service Manager and Optimizing Bird Collision Survey

As mentioned in my last post, I had coffee with the Lulife property service manager. We are finally about to execute the collaboration plan we had discussed back in spring. The main topic for the meeting today was how to train cleaners to handle bird collision surveys before the busiest migration season ( or more like get them used to surveying).

Cleaners are always busy. They do not have much extra time to survey for 20-30 mins everyday. The key challenge was to design a survey system that is simple for them but still gives us the most useful data. That data helps us identify collision hotspots and push anti-collision methods to residents (by kinda intimidating them w the number of deaths or so).

I adapted the national survey and customized it. I cut out unnecessary steps. For example, I removed the pre-survey stage. To avoid double-recording the same bird, we now rely on time stamps, body removal status, and exact discovery spot. This makes the review team work harder to avoid double counting but keeps things easier for cleaners. They only record if they actually find a bird while cleaning corners. No need to remember which glass panel they are in charge of.

I also dropped tricky parts like identifying bird species and using compass directions. The survey is now stripped down to the essentials: location, bird condition, photos of the spot, photos of the body, number of bodies, location check-in, and time check-in. Simple and clean.

On top of that, I talked with the manager about doing a bird-themed lecture at the community study group. The idea is for kids to take our leaflets home, explain them to parents, and pull more families interested in birds already into the project. The property mannager connected me with the study group leader. We already locked in July 30 for the lecture. Next step is for me to create engaging lecture content (since at times, kids only find birdwatching interesting but not indoor lectures 😭).
