🐼8.23 Panda Base VH: Panda Fuwan’s Condition and Why Surgery Was Abandoned
Last time on my blog I mentioned that Panda Fuwan might need surgery and that the director was struggling with how to cooperate with West China Hospital. After much discussion we finally decided not to proceed with surgery.
Now it is time to share the real situation with the public. We also hope people stop denying the truth.
We always thought Panda Fuwan’s problem was congenital weakness in her hind legs. In fact she is confirmed as the first recorded case of congenital spinal lipoma.
The reason we gave up surgery is very simple. Every step carries heavy risk. Anesthesia, post operative care, every part of the process could endanger her life. The chance of success is tiny. No case like this has ever been treated before. After professional discussions we concluded that keeping her condition stable is the best choice.
For urination and defecation two keepers stay on duty 24 hours. Every two hours they stimulate urination. Eating is fine but if she eats too much she cannot pass stool. Her intestinal movement and digestion are extremely weak.
The back brace she wears is necessary. Last year she often could not pass stool. She had three episodes of intestinal obstruction and nearly died twice. The brace prevents injury to her legs and tail and also helps with bowel movement.
Her will to survive is strong. Taking care of her is still very difficult but we are giving our best. We only hope she stays well. <3
