đŸŠ©7.3 BirdWatching Society: Chengdu Bird Checklist 5.0 Released

After three months of hard review of Chengdu’s bird records, today our team officially released Chengdu Bird Checklist 5.0.

Compared with last year’s version, this update adds 9 new wild bird species.

Now Chengdu is home to 586 bird species, covering 22 orders, 83 families. That’s 38.94% of all species in China (586/1505) and 77.41% of all species in Sichuan (586/757).

  • 20 species (such as Buff-throated Partridge Tetraophasis obscurus) are under Class I National Protection.

  • 112 species (such as Blood Pheasant Ithaginis cruentus) are under Class II National Protection.

  • 452 species (such as Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis) are listed as “Terrestrial Wildlife with Significant Ecological, Scientific, and Social Value.”

Chengdu is not just a city of pandas. It’s a bird hotspot in china too — almost 4 out of every 10 bird species in China can be found here.
